The Aims of our Society is to:
1) Developing Advocacy:
A key concern for prospective barristers is illustrating and developing advocacy. We hope to provide specific case breakdown events in collaboration with solicitor society and establish relationships with advocacy scholars to organise moots and debating.
2) Exposure to practice:
Exposure to practice can provide organic connections and a greater understanding of the bar. We propose communal chambers and court visits. This would hopefully encourage those who may be shy to engage as individuals.
3) Independent opportunities:
We wish to take a light approach on identifying opportunities e.g. minis. However, we want to provide workshops, in collaboration with the employability services including:
(1)How to get the most from legal exposure.
(2) Effective communication of experiences for applications.
(3) strategic chambers research and pupillage application positioning.
This group is for students at The University of Law Manchester who are interested in pursuing a career at the Bar. The society is currently available to conversion students, though, discussions about engaging a wider audience have commenced with Niall Macdonald.
We hope to plan specific case breakdown events in collaboration with the Solicitor Society, alongside opportunities for mooting and debates. By identifying the different legal roles and routes available, we aim to support members by providing workshops on how to get the most from legal exposure. Panel discussions with pupils, barristers and the Employability Team, alongside pupillage interview preparation sessions, will provide members with a greater understanding of the Bar.
These events would take place on campus, at external venues and online, depending on the availability of engaged contacts. We hope to offer members both academic and social exposure.
We have provisionally outlined a set of initial events, as outlined below:
November: Introductory social in partnership with the Solicitor Society, panel discussion event and ‘Who is who?’ discussions.
December: Advocacy session and Christmas event featuring a themed Christmas case.
January: Pupillage interview session with the Employability team, in preparation for applications from February onwards.
February: Mooting and chamber visits.
Further activities for the following months will be decided at a later date.
