Squiggly Careers

Squiggly Careers are more common that you might think. What is a Squiggly Career? Sir Dominic Cadbury, Group Chief Executive of Cadbury Schweppes (1983 to 1993), claimed that “There is no such thing as a career path. It's crazy paving and you have to lay it yourself.” The term 'squiggly career', coined by Helen Tupper and Sarah Ellis in their book, 'The Squiggly Career', supports Sir Cadbury's argument.

Emma Croom, Programme and Student Lead in the Business School at Ulaw's Birmingham campus started her career with an LL.B (Hons) degree from a leading University and immediately joined a Graduate Management Training Programme in retail banking for the UK's 13th largest company in the FTSE100 - this was her first squiggly move. Thereafter, she has laid her crazy paving in her own way over 30 years and will talk about how she developed new skills and experiences at each 'squiggle', making herself more valuable and employable (and interesting!) along the way. She will also argue that with some squiggles along your career pathway, work never becomes boring as you are always learning new things and amassing experiences. Sailing in the South China Sea, meeting Formula 1 teams at Brands Hatch race track and being chauffeured to business meetings in a Rolls Royce were some of the less expected experiences she picked up along the way.
