Welcome to SU Communities!

Building communities at ULaw can be a big challenge! With a diverse population of students who study all over the world, we know it can be difficult to meet your peers and make lasting connections. We recognise the hard work and success of our student leaders, clubs and societies and colleagues at ULaw in bringing students together through a variety of in person and online activities, in particular the creation of group chats and online communities. These groups have been a lifeline for many students looking to make friends and bond over the things they have in common.

Over the summer of 24, we have been collaborating on an exciting project to give ULaw Students access to Microsoft Teams. MS Teams has loads of features that helps organisations communicate internally including chats, meetings, virtual team spaces and resource sharing. Now that students can access MS Teams, we have a fantastic opportunity to utilise the platform as a tool to develop and support group chats and online communities in a more official and sustainable way.

We are thrilled to launch SU Communities – online spaces for students to chat, socialise, organise activities together and bond over common interests. In these early stages, we hope the Teams you can access will be useful and engaging, can grow organically, and make finding a community easy and fun!

SU Communities will have two ‘Teams’, each with a handful of ‘channels’ to get things going:

  • Academic: This Team is dedicated to discussions for your courses – perfect for finding peers in the same class or delving into collaborative study.
  • Identity and Interest: This Team is focused more on the social aspect of university life – chat with students on your campus or make new friends with similar hobbies, bond over common identities or learn more about something completely new!

You can find a full list of the Channels below, but please make sure to read the important information before you join in – in particular our guidance on conduct and acceptable use on MS Teams.

Important Information!

How to use teams

Please note that while Teams is ideal for informal and social communications, it is not the appropriate platform for complex, individual, sensitive communications. Additionally, Teams should not be used to contact administrative or operational teams. These types of more formal communications should continue to be conducted via email to the appropriate team.

Conduct and acceptable use

  • SU Communities and the wider use of MS Teams are governed by the University of Law’s Student IT Acceptable Use Policy and any misconduct could result in disciplinary procedures. (see paragraphs 1.5 - 1.8).
  • Certain channels are designed to provide a social space for students with protected characteristics such as disability, age, gender, sexuality or ethnicity for the purposes of equality, diversity and inclusion. Students are reminded that they should only join these channels if they identify with the relevant characteristic, however, should be aware that anyone with a ULaw Microsoft Account will be able to join this channel and view content. Additionally, relevant staff may have access to these channels and reserve the right to remove or hide content. Please also note paragraph 4.4 in the policy linked above: “Do not distribute or share group members usernames, email addresses and other personal information with non-group members.”
  • All channels will have a delegated moderator who will be a ULaw Staff member, elected student representative, or student. Moderation will be informal, and any issues that arise within a channel should be reported using the mechanisms below.
  • Channels should only be used to discuss content related specifically for that channel, and never be used to post spam, irrelevant or inappropriate content. The SU reserves the right to use any Channel to make important announcements.

Reporting issues and misconduct

  • General technical access and difficulties in using the MS Teams platform should be directed to I.T - IT.ServiceDesk@law.ac.uk
  • ULaw is looking forward to reviewing how MS Teams has been received and how it is being used to enhance your student experience. If you have any general feedback, please email MSTeams_for_students@law.ac.uk. If you have feedback or issues relating specifically to SU Communities Teams and Channels, please email studentsunion@law.ac.uk.
  • If you or someone else who is a member of staff or a student experiences abuse, bullying, harassment, hate crime or sexual misconduct you can use the Report and Support site to report your concerns. You can also use this site to report any concerns you have for the wellbeing of a member of our community. Report + Support - The University of Law.
  • If you have any questions, concerns or would like to flag content you’re not sure needs reporting, please contact the channel administrator or email students.union@law.ac.uk with details of which channel and any details relating to your concern.

Moderation

Moderators of groups are provided with the following guidance:

  • The role of a moderator is to ensure that the SU Communities Channel remains a positive and welcoming environment for its members and that content is relevant to the purpose of the channel.
  • We do not expect any moderator, be they student or staff, to read and review every piece of content, and instead encourage members to flag or report any issues directly to the moderator or via the mechanisms outlined above.
  • If issues are raised, the moderator should refer to the policies and procedures above to determine if the issue meets any criteria for misuse or misconduct. Where they believe any content to be inappropriate, they have the right to hide, delete or remove the content and should inform the member who posted it that they have done so, and why.
  • Any instances of abuse, bullying, harassment, hate crime or sexual misconduct should be captured via screenshot before deletion, and sent to studentsunion@law.ac.uk for advice on appropriate actions to take. Moderators have the right to block users from the channel and should do so if there is a risk of repeated misuse.
  • Any moderator or member can, at any time, use the report and support site for themselves or on behalf of another member.
  • If for any reason a moderator is no longer able to continue in their role, they should notify the SU as soon as possible by emailing studentsunion@law.ac.uk.
  • In certain circumstances, moderators and the SU reserve the right to temporarily or permanently hide or delete Channels. Circumstances include but are not limited to repeated misuse by multiple members.
  • If any member feels as though the moderator has not followed this guidance or would like to appeal a decision made – they should contact studentsunion@law.ac.uk.

Requesting a new Team or Channel

For clarity, a Team is a dedicated space for organising multiple people, channels and resources. The SU currently owns two Teams, SU Communities – Academic, and SU Communities – Identity and Interest.

Channels live within a Team and serve as categories for areas of discussion and engagement.

Students are welcome to request their own Team if they think it will be useful, however are reminded that general group chats and channels within existing teams might be more suitable depending on the purpose. ULaw IT reserve the right to deny a new Team request should a similar Team or Channel exist that is open to the User.

  • To request a new Channel in an existing SU Community Team, please fill in this short form which will be processed by the SU: New Channel Request Form.
  • To request a new Team for your own purposes, please complete this short form which will be processed by ULaw IT: Request a new MS Team.
