Domestic Abuse – What is it, and what options are available to help victims?

The presentation will begin by taking a look at what domestic abuse is and the different forms that it can take. We will then explain what legal options are available to victims of domestic abuse, both criminal and civil. We will cover some of the different charges that can be brought, such as physical and sexual assault, rape, stalking, harassment and controlling and coercive behaviour. We will discuss DVPOs and DVPNs and their upcoming replacements, the DAPOs and DAPNs. Furthermore, we will explain the civil orders that can be applied for by victims, such as Non-Molestation Orders and Occupation Orders. There will also be information regarding where to signpost victims to and a brief explanation of the availability of legal aid to help fund an application for a civil legal order.

Tutor: The session will be delivered by ULaw students who are studying on the BPC LLM programme as part of the Pro Bono module and who are supervised by Susannah Boubaker. Susannah is currently a ULaw Lecturer, however she was previously a Family Lawyer, specialising in Domestic Abuse cases.
