An Introduction to Drafting Legal Documents

This session will help you to understand and draft a range of legal documents.

_____

Before joining the session, participants should think of an example of a real-life agreement that you have concluded e.g. mobile phone contract / car purchase / hiring a tradesperson.  Provide a list of the key elements of the agreement that you considered.

______

As your legal career progresses into the next stage of work, you will encounter and be expected to understand and draft a range of legal documents.

The session will cover useful resources, the use of precedents, nuances of the English Language, terminology, drafting principles and conventions, appropriate structure and the importance and relevance of certain phrases and clauses.  This introduction to some of the key aspects of the skill of drafting will equip you with foundation level knowledge of how to prepare, draft and understand legal documents, with a particular focus on contracts.

This is primarily aimed at Law students and will be particularly useful for those that are about to begin their training contract or qualifying work experience, but anyone is welcome as the techniques can apply to a range of situations - any career path following graduation from your studies will require the ability to communicate effectively, which is a key element of the skill of drafting.
