Why be a rep

It’s never been a better time to be involved as a part-time student rep at the University of Law Students’ Union!

We’re being bold and radical, overhauling our paid part time student voice structures to be the best they can be. We are currently offering Campus Community Officer, Equalities Network Co-Chair, and Academic Rep roles for this upcoming year!

There are many benefits to being involved in the SU, and here a just a couple of reasons why…

You personally benefit from the role. You will meet your fellow students from all across the University, from all campuses and courses. If you want to see just how big the University of Law is, meet new people and get involved in your community, this role benefits students who want to put themselves out there and meet new people! There are also plenty of professional benefits to getting involved. These roles can help you gain ‘soft skills’ that look great on a CV, and you may not necessarily get from a formal classroom experience. In the past, we have had students gain:

  • Events management skills, from running social events and mixers on and off campuses
  • Time management skills, from planning to attend multiple meetings alongside existing study and life commitments
  • Advocacy skills, particularly in working with us to constructively challenge the University on academic issues
  • Representation skills, from being able to tell us what their fellow students are thinking and what needs changing on their campuses
  • Budget skills, to be able to run event cost effectively
  • Confidence-boosting skills
  • Wider appreciation of working life and practices
  • To be part of a change-making agenda from an SU that consistently punches above its weight, and demystify the internal processes of ULaw
  • AND you'll also be eligible for our Student Rep of the Month, and Student Leader of the Year Award

In the past, students have clearly valued these extra-curricular opportunities in allowing them to participate in a representative, decision-making process of different conversations across the organisation. They have appreciated being involved conversations across a variety of academic and social ways to improve their own education and that of their fellow students, but also improve University processes and policies. If you have ever felt something at ULaw just isn’t quite right or not working for you, these roles give you the opportunity to make that change.

More widely, the academic and extra-academic feedback offered by reps ensures that the University fulfils the TEF B1 (Academic Experience) and B3 condition (Student Outcome) conditions.

Paid roles like this help you understand the world of work and give you invaluable skills for the future. In addition, it can open up a whole new world of representative opportunities for you. If you ever felt like making a change and making an impact, then these are the roles for you!

Applications are open until Monday 5th October:
