October
Hello, I am back with the next instalment of the monthly updates, this time for October. Hope you are having a great day! Here is a summary of what I have been doing to represent your voice in the month of October:
Helped with the shortlisting of the SU Manager (Maternity Cover) Role
I was on the panel that selected the best candidates for the SU Manager role that will cover the time Emma Beenham will be on Maternity Leave (Jan 2024 till Sept 2024). This was a difficult choice as there we many great candidates but we were able to narrow it down to Cassie O’Boyle. She is experienced, hard working and has a kind and positive personality. We are grateful to have her be our SU Manager for the 9 months in 2024.
Interview with Irish Broadcaster about the Student Housing Crisis
Huma and I recorded an in-person interview with a major Irish broadcaster about the student housing crisis. Raising awareness about such key issues is a great privilege for Huma and I because we have had countless bad encounters with landlords and with university accommodation in the past so we wanted to highlight our experiences to the public and the youth. Our goal is to inform the public and ensure at least one family or one young person knows about the issues university students are facing so that they would hopefully be prepared when the time comes to find accommodation for their university.
Held Independence Information Sessions so that students are better informed
Huma and I also held some Independence information sessions this month to ensure that students have a better understanding of the policy that they will be voting for. I believe that Independence from the University would only lead to positive outcomes for students however, through these information sessions I challenged myself to look at independence from different angles and reflect on my position. After this reflection, not only did I become even more in favour of independence, I now see independence and the reasons for an independent Students’ Union, the only way our SU can develop and fix fundamental governance, financial processes and structural concerns that are currently preventing us from operating to the best of our ability.
Organising and Attending the Nottingham Freshers Fair
It was fantastic to visit our amazing Nottingham campus. I am a huge fan of the Nottingham campus and have had welcoming experiences every time I have visited them. The freshers were much better attended than I expected and we got to speak with passionate students.
Organising and Attending the Birmingham Postgraduate Freshers Fair
Birmingham is the city that I currently live in, so the trip to the campus was just a short walk. The freshers' event was held in the cafe area of the campus and our stall was the most impressive as always. We gave the students visiting our stall endless snacks and even raffle prizes such as blankets and teddy bears. We are thrilled with the turnout and happy to see so many of you voting in our reps elections and independence referendum.
