Pedram Co-President - August 2022 Update

Monday 24-10-2022 - 09:00

Great to be talking to you all again in this second instalment of my blog series. You can find my July blog here. One of my main goals as a president is to be open and transparent with you and to be in touch with you. Through consistent communication, the SU will know about your issues, your concerns and can represent your voice properly in meetings with University staff.

I'd like to update you on what I have been working on since August.

1st SU Podcast Recording

We recorded our first SU podcast this month! In the podcast, we discussed our roles, manifestos, and one cool hidden feature in the services provided by the University of Law, so do make sure to listen to find out!

1st Drop-in Session

We also held our first drop-in session on the 15th of August, open and advertised to all students to review their concerns. Many came to us with concerns regarding Visas, CAS and delayed communication from the University. Emma Barlow and I actioned these immediately and met with the relevant University staff to address them.

ULaw Leagues

ULaw leagues is a week of competition and games in February organised by the Students' Union. We came together to discuss the dates, logistics and activities we are planning to do during that week. Stay tuned for more info!

Period Products, Personal Alarms and Hygiene Products

I created a document with the cost of buying bulk products and a comparison between the different providers and presented it to the SU manager, Emma Beenham. She asked some further questions regarding the implementation of this idea, and I am in the process of creating a response to them.

Meeting with our BAME Liberation Officer

We met with Chanecia, our BAME officer, and she spoke with us about her experience and provided us with some inspiring words about what being a representative of students means and how better to represent student interests. We are very thankful for her service as a liberation officer and for her to have continued working in that role even in the summer.

Independence

Ever since entering this role, I have realised the importance of having an independent Students' Union from the University. I believe this ensures that we can do our roles without the University having an unjust influence over us. My line manager is from the University and I am in a 6-month probate period from the University even though I have been elected by you, the students. It has become my priority to make our union an independent one so that the student voice will never come second to the University. This month I had some productive discussions with SU staff and the University about the next steps towards having a vote of independence where all students could vote. I will do everything in my power to make this vote happen and for students to have a vote on this matter. Stay tuned.

I hope you have enjoyed reading this blog. Please do get in touch if you feel strongly about any of the points that I mentioned or if you had any feedback on the format of these blogs. It was nice talking to you. Do reach out to me, and I look forward to writing to you soon!
